Just a week ahead of the cricket World Cup, India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni became a father after his wife Sakshi gave birth to a baby girl at a private hospital on Friday, reported the Times of India (TOI).

The 33-year-old cricketer became a first time father after his daughter was born at Fortis Hospital in the evening.

Dhoni had tied the nuptial knot with childhood friend Sakshi Singh Rawat on July 4, 2010 . Sakshi is usually seen travelling with her husband on tours but didn’t travel with Dhoni during the Australia tour.

Sources close to the family said that the baby was born almost a month earlier, right on schedule for the World Cup.

Dhoni is currently busy preparing for India’s title defense at the upcoming World Cup which is going to take place in Australia and New Zealand. The Indian captain recently announced his retirement from Test matches after the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.

The World Cup winning captain had earlier spoken to Yahoo about how a break from cricket may have helped his players recharge themselves for the upcoming tournament.

“It’s not easy to play four Test matches... followed by a tri-nation series,” Dhoni told reporters in Adelaide.

“So this break would have definitely helped them to recharge their batteries ... only time will tell.”

“I know that cooked and over-cooked is a very fine line between them —and especially if you do a barbecue you can understand that,” he added.
