Polio: 0.75m children inoculated

A one-day polio immunisation campaign was conducted on Sunday in 97 union councils of Peshawar district.

According to a health official, poliovirus drops were administered to over 0.75 million children during the door-to-door campaign. He said around 4,000 teams participated in the short interval additional dose drive amid strict security.

The district administration had imposed Section 144 on motorbike riding and police was deployed across the district. He said another three-day campaign for 20 other districts is on the cards.

The provincial and federal governments have decided to counter nine preventable diseases in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa through a joint effort.


The decision was taken during an apex committee meeting convened for the implementation of the national action plan on provincial level.

With three new cases reported on Saturday in the country, the polio count for 2015 has gone up to six.

Firing incident

Panic gripped the city when a man exchanged fire with police in Shahi Bala village, in the jurisdiction of Regi police station on Sunday.

Police said a man was spotted near polio workers, armed with an AK-47. Upon seeing the police, he opened fire in the air and fled. The polio workers were escorted to a house where they remained unharmed. Police raided several houses after the incident and refuted the rumour that the man intended to harm polio workers.
