KARACHI:

A district and sessions judge remanded a suspect to police custody in a cell phone theft case.

On Thursday, a court bailiff had recovered suspect Raees Khan from an illegal detention cell set up atop the Darakhshan police station. The bailiff had conducted the raid on the order of District South district and sessions judge Ahmed Saba following Raees’ family's plea for his recovery from unlawful police custody.

Petitioner Rizwan Khan had alleged that the police had taken his brother into illegal custody and had demanded Rs2 million for his safe release. During the raid, the bailiff found Raees in chains but the officials failed to produce any record of his custody.

The court subsequently summoned the SHO, calling for Raees' criminal record.Submitting the record on Friday, the SHO said that Raees had been detained for cell phone theft and a FIR was registered against him. The raid had occurred while he was being interrogated, he added.
