KARACHI:

The man allegedly responsible for killing Karachi University's dean of Islamic Studies, Dr Shakeel Auj, has been arrested, said AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo on Wednesday.

On the morning of September 18, 2014, Auj was silenced by a single 9mm bullet in Gulshan-e-Iqbal when he was on the way to attend a ceremony that was being organised in his honour at the Khana-e-Farhang Iran [Iranian Cultural Centre].

The suspect, identified as Muhammad Mansoor, is a resident of Liaquatabad. He was arrested along with his accomplices identified as Faheem Jabal Poori and Ehtesham. Two other suspects were not identified.

The press conference was also attended by DIG East Zone, Munir Ahmed Sheikh and KU's teachers' association representatives who disclosed that the suspect was the member of a political party.

According to the police, the premeditated attack took place when Mansoor signaled Poori and other three accomplices about the position of the police and Rangers in the Nipa Chowrangi area. Mansoor was at the Sir Syed University when he heard gunshots 20 minutes later near the bridge. He claims he escaped as fast as he could.

Mansoor is also the alleged suspect in the murder of Prof Syed Sibte Hussain - the principal of the Government Degree College in Liaquatabad - in March 2013. Back in April 2013, the police had also claimed that two suspects affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Jhangbvi and involved in Prof Hussain’s murder were arrested from Surjani Town. The police claim that in 1993 Mansoor was also involved in killing three political party workers.
