Reversal: Thin attendance marks ‘official’ Saturday

Government offices remain open on Saturday following the government’s decision to end the two-day weekly holidays.

ISLAMABAD:
The government offices remained open on Saturday following the government’s decision to end the two-day weekly holidays.

However, thin attendance was observed at these offices which include banks, schools and other institutions.  Some employees were of the view that after taking Saturday off in the recent past, it would take some time to come back to the old routine. While others, lamented the decision terming the two-day weekend, ‘as an international norm and much-needed after a hectic week’.

Muhammad Adnan, a government employee, said that one day holiday was not enough for the people who had to work for six days in week. Another employee, Raja Zahid criticising government’s decision said, “Now the workers have gotten used to the routine and the sudden change is ‘uncalled for’. On the other hand, some of the school children also expressed their displeasure saying that all the private schools remained closed on Saturday.

Earlier in the month of April this year, government had issued notification to observe two holidays a week in order to save electricity in the country and first Saturday’s holiday was observed on April 24 this year.
