HYDERABAD:

Representatives of cane farmers from Mirpurkhas threatened to set sugar mills on fire if the on-going delay in sugarcane procurement led to the destruction of their crop. They also blamed the Sindh government of being indifferent to the plight of the farmers.

“The stubbornness of the mill owners is causing massive losses to the growers,” said Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Nawab Yousuf Talpur at a meeting held at the residence of Sarfaraz Junejo, a leader of the protesting farmers. However, he was confident that the protest movement would soon force the mills to relent to their demands, adding that they would organise similar demonstrations to voice their demands about other crops to the government.

Talpur, who told the meeting that he had conveyed the growers’ demand to the Sindh chief minister, also said that he would join a sit-in that will be held on the Super Highway on January 27.
