ISLAMABAD:
Think tanks play a primary role for the promotion of socio-economic development in a country besides serving as a platform for various stakeholders guarding the larger public interest on specific issues and helping decision-makers.
This was stated by former ambassador and chair of the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI)’ Board of Governors Shafqat Kakakhel while speaking at a roundtable meeting on Thursday.
He said only independent and credible think tanks can present the best policy options for the government. The roundtable was organised in conjunction with the launch of the “2014 Global Go-to Think Thank Index” released at the University of Pennsylvania under The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program on January 22, 2015.
Shakeel Ramay of SDPI shared the ranking criteria and methodology adopted to collate the ranking.
SDPI Executive Director Dr Abid Suleri said that 6,681 think tanks were ranked globally. “Pakistan Institute of International Affairs stood 16th while SDPI stood 19th while on the criteria of trans-disciplinary, SDPI was the only think tank from Pakistan that was nominated and stood 38th”.
