In broad daylight: Policemen under fire in Karachi, 2 more dead
SHO Ejaz Lodhi says this is a continuation of the targeted killing of policemen
KARACHI:
A day after Karachi witnessed killing of two policemen, two more personnel were gunned down in broad daylight in Nazimabad area.
Abdul Ghafoor, 57, and Muhammad Farooq, 47 - deputed for the security of Imambargah Noorul Eman located in Nazimabad No. 3 - were targeted at around 8:30 in the morning.
“The incident occurred shortly after the policemen replaced those deputed in the evening shift,” eyewitnesses said. “Two young men on a motorcycle were behind the killing, who even did not give the personnel any time to react.” They added that the miscreants shot the policemen multiple times and fled unchallenged.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, SHO Ejaz Lodhi said, “This is a continuation of the targeted killing of policemen.” He said police have collected empty casings of bullets used in the incident and the same will be sent to the forensic division, adding that sketches are being made with the help of eyewitness accounts to nab the culprits.
The bodies were taken to the hometowns – Faisalabad and Mansehra - for burial. “Abdul Ghaffor was deployed to guard the Imambargah at his own will as he avoided patrolling or snap-checking given his age,” said a colleague of the fallen cop.
The LEA suspects that members of banned militant outfits could be behind the targeted killings of policemen in the metropolis.
This was the third major incident of targeting policemen over a couple of days as two personnel were killed on Saturday when gangsters attacked the police post in Lyari’s Baghdadi neighborhood whereas one traffic constable was gunned down in Malir.
With the fresh shooting, the death toll of policemen killed this month in the line of duty has reached 15, with the incidents occurring in Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Baldia Town and Orangi. Moreover, two Rangers personnel lost their lives during an encounter with the militants in Landhi.
