GILGIT:
Six of the nine absconders involved in an attack on a police team in Dudoshal valley of Diamer district in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) on January 11 have surrendered, police said on Wednesday.

The surrender was reportedly made possible by the representatives of a jirga who convinced the perpetrators to hand themselves over to the police. “The jirga has assured the arrest of the three remaining men in a day or two,” a policeman told The Express Tribune.

On Sunday, officials Riaz Khan and Amanullah were injured when a police team, led by Diamer Superintendent Police (SP) Rauf Qaisarani, was ambushed in Dudoshal. The police had initiated action against the absconders after receiving intelligence reports that they were hiding in the area. The assailants attacked the police when they tried to arrest them.

The criminals are said to be involved in tribal feuds and were wanted by the police for various murder cases. A local court has already handed sentences to them. However, the absconders had repeatedly escaped from the police and went into hiding.

“All exit and entry roads have been closed to ensure the perpetrators don’t flee,” the policeman added.

According to insiders, the police have also decided to raze the houses of the men who attacked the police team.

According to SP Rauf Qaisarani, an operation has been launched in Dudoshal valley to purge it of criminals who challenge the rule of law. “The police will remain in the valley till the last criminal is arrested,” Qaisarani told the media.

He added a permanent check post will be set up in Joot area to keep a check on criminal activities. “If the jirga fails to produce the remaining absconders within the stipulated time, the police will start action against them (the offenders),” said the SP.
