ISLAMABAD:
The Pakistan Public Works Department (PWD) has estimated Rs 260 million as the initial cost the construction of missing facilities in educational institutions of the Islamabad Capital Territory owing to security concerns following the Peshawar school attack.

There are an estimated 79 schools and colleges where construction of boundary walls and fixation of razor wires needs to take place. A survey in this regard was completed on Monday which only includes public institutions of the urban areas of the capital.

There are 115 schools and colleges in the capital’s urban territory while the survey of the rural educational institutes will be started in the second phase.

According an official in the Capital Administration and Development Division, they were also considering re-appropriating Rs200 million from the existing available budget. “We will also opt for minimum cost expenditure because Rs260 million is the initial estimate,” said the official.

CADD Additional Secretary Qaiser Majeed commented that they held a second meeting on Tuesday and will send the file to the finance division by the end of the week for approval.

“We will also include some officials from Federal Directorate of Education for transparency and swiftness in the process,” he said, adding that the whole process will take a month after which the construction work will begin.

Similarly, on the second day of the reopening of educational institutes, institutes’ heads collected data of focal persons for security of schools and colleges and forwarded it to the Inspector General of Police and the police station of the area concerned.

As per the new government guidelines, staff responsible for update of the security of educational institutes will constantly be in touch with police officials.

Besides, CADD Minister of State Usman Ibrahim along with FDE DG Aasif Khawaja visited several schools and colleges to review security arrangements on Tuesday.
