Rashid Mehmood Soomro, son of slain Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam - Fazl (JUI-F) leader Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, was elected as the general secretary of JUI-F Sindh chapter on Sunday.
He defeated Maulana Abdullah Pahore in the elections held in Larkana under the JUI-F central election commissioner Sikandar Malik.
A total 370 members took part in the voting. Rashid received 233 votes and his opponent, Pahore, got 137 votes. The post had been lying vacant due to the assassination of Khalid Soomro, who was gunned down by unidentified men in Sukkur on November 29.
JUI-F Senator Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, who was also present on the occasion, told the media that his party never opposed the draft at the All Parties Conference but was against the inclusion of religious terrorism in the said bill. He said that religious seminaries were established centuries ago and will remain intact always.
