Two anti-terrorism courts (ATC) convicted on Saturday two men in separate cases of attempted murder and extortion.
Faisal Shah, who also goes by aliases 'SP', 'Chota' and 'Zardari', was sentenced to 33 years in prison by ATC-IX after all three cases against him were merged. Shah was convicted for his involvement in assaulting policemen with intention to murder, and carrying illicit weapons and explosives.
The judge, Farman Ali Kanasro, sentenced him to 14 years in prison for carrying explosives under Sections 6(2) and 7(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 10 years for attempted murder, seven years for possessing an unlicensed weapon, and two years for assaulting and deterring public servants from doing their job. In the order, the judge observed that all the sentences will run concurrently.
The convict was also ordered to pay Rs130,000 as fine. If he fails to pay the amount, he will face an additional 15 months in jail.
Shah was arrested by the Shershah police on May 30 last year after an encounter and three FIRs were registered against him under Sections 353, 324, 186, 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), Section 23(1)-A of the Sindh Arms Act, Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosives Substances Act and Section 7 of the ATA.
Separately, ATC-I convicted an extortionist, identified as Raja Rashid, and sentenced him to seven years in rigorous imprisonment. He was also imposed a fine of Rs50,000. If he fails to pay the amount, he will face an additional six months in jail.
Rashid was arrested in July, 2013, by the Korangi Industrial Area police for demanding Rs1 million as extortion from a factory owner. According to the prosecution, the convict along with his two absconding accomplices, Haji Naik Muhammad and Shera, had threatened to kill the factory owner if the money was not paid.
The court has declared the two absconders as proclaimed offenders. They were booked under Section 380, 386, 506-B, 34 of the PPC read with Section 7 of the ATA.
