Rounded up in capital: Over 17,000 suspects held

ISLAMABAD:
The capital police arrested 17,918 persons on various charges and recovered huge cache of contraband and weapons as well as valuables worth Rs458 million from their possession during the year 2014, said an official press release issued on Thursday.
On the directives of Interior Minister the Islamabad Police enhanced patrol and ensured strict checking at exit and entry points to the city.
Coordination with community members was also improved to get information about criminal elements residing in various localities.
Owing to these and other measures police managed to arrest the suspected criminals including 296 persons for their alleged involvement in 94 murder cases and 40 blind murder cases; 16 for their involvement in 13 kidnapping cases.
The police also arrested 20 suspected terrorists and seized 26 hand grenades, a suicide jacket, 243kg of explosive material, four detonators and four fuses from their possession.
During the past year, 46 persons were apprehended for their alleged involvement in dacoity cases and snatched valuables worth Rs94.6 million were recovered from their possession.
A total of 238 suspects were arrested for snatching items and valuables worth over Rs32.7 million were recovered from their possession.
A total of 192 burglars were arrested during last year and valuables over Rs15.8 million were recovered from their possession. Moreover 337 thieves were nabbed and valuables worth Rs56.4 million were recovered from them.
Police apprehended 233 persons for their alleged involvement in snatching/tempering of cars and motorbikes and recovered 180 vehicles and 107 motorbikes from their possession.
Police also nabbed 415 proclaimed offenders and 533 court absconders.
In crackdown against drug pushers and bootleggers, 239kg hashish, 24kg heroin, 7kg opium and 14,559 wine bottles were recovered.
Police also recovered 79 Kalashnikovs, 57 guns, 693 pistols, 10,803 rounds from the suspects. A total of 137 gamblers, 448 involved in sheesha smoking and 11,640 professional beggars were held.
Police also nabbed seven fraudsters and recovered fake currency notes worth Rs3.3 million.
In various search operations, the police arrested 4,414 suspects, while 3,639 persons were kept under vigilance in order to maintain tranquility.
Police also took action against 527 persons under Security and Shop Act.
The policing system in the capital has been revamped and divided the city into 87 beats where vigilance and security committees had been established with the purpose to combat criminal or terror elements effectively. An assistant sub-inspector had been appointed as beat officer who would ensure complete coordination with the members of those committees.
IGP Tahir Alam Khan said that it was the prime responsibility of police to provide relief to citizens, adding that every possible effort would be made to provide protection to the lives and property of citizens as well as resolving their complaints on immediate basis.
