SUKKUR/LAHORE/KARACHI:
Jail officials on Thursday put off the execution of Ikramul Haq alias Akram Lahori, the co-founder of the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), after the legal heirs of a homicide victim pardoned him.
The heirs of the deceased told the authorities that they had struck an agreement with Lahori’s kin and therefore the execution ought to be stopped. They insisted that they were pardoning the convict voluntarily and without any kind of pressurise.
The move is at odds with the Lahore High Court (LHC) judges who had earlier ruled out the possibility of any “compromise” between the two parties in FIRs registered under Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
A jail official on the condition of anonymity told The Express Tribune that the magistrate recorded the statements of the legal heirs of the deceased on the spot and referred the case to a trial court.
Awaiting execution
Three terrorists, Khalil Ahmed, Mohammad Talha and Mohammad Shahid Hanif, involved in murder cases will meet their fate on January 13 in Central Prison Sukkur.
Two of the terrorists belonging to the LeJ have been shifted to Karachi Prison after the Sindh High Court (SHC) deferred their sentence and ordered their shifting to Karachi from Sukkur.
Mercy plea pending
The SHC called comments from the home and prison authorities concerned on a petition to set aside hurriedly-issued black warrants to execute death convict, Mohammad Saeed, on January 14, without any decision of his mercy petition pending before the president.
