Busted: Man nabbed for trying to extort money

LAHORE:

Crime Investigation Agency officials claimed on Thursday to have arrested a man wanted for attempting to extort money from Sanam Taseer, a daughter of former governor Salman Taseer.

An official said Nawaz had called Taseer on December 22 and demanded Rs2 million. He said he had claimed to be a member of an organisation called Daish-i-Islam. The official said Nawaz had threatened to abduct and kill Taseer’s children if she did not capitulate to his demand. He said he had claimed to know Taseer’s daily routine and where her children studied.

The official said CCPO Amin Wains had directed CIA SP Umer Virk to probe the issue. He said police managed to nab Nawaz by tracking his mobile phone. The official said the agency had also seized the device used by Nawaz to contact Taseer.

He said Nasreen, wife of the extortionist, had been a maidservant at Taseer’s house. Nawaz had obtained information from her.
