ISLAMABAD: A special court on Thursday rejected the government's request to try former military ruler General Pervez Musharraf alone in a high treason trial, Express News reported.

In an earlier hearing, the court had argued that all co-abettors and collaborators involved should be tried alongside Musharraf, while the prosecutor argued that Musharraf alone should be tried in the case.

There is widespread belief that the idea for the treason trial came from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's personal vendetta against the former ruler, who in 1999 ousted him from power through a military coup, put him behind bars for a short period and forced him into exile.

Prior to the initiation of the trial, the government formed a three-member joint investigation team (JIT) of Federal Investigation Agency for investigation.

The JIT has questioned and probed several abettors and collaborators to find their roles, whether direct or indirect,  in the imposition of the November 3 emergency rule imposed by Musharraf in 2007.

The federal government has exclusively fixed Musharraf in this case and filed a complaint against him.

The hearing has now been adjourned until February 17, 2015.
