Fight against extremism: Failure is not an option, says Gen Raheel
Punjab’s apex committee to oversee counter-terror plan implementation meets in Lahore
LAHORE:
As the government formed ‘apex committees’ in all provinces to oversee the implementation of the National Action Plan against terrorism, army chief General Raheel Sharif on Saturday assured the provincial governments of the military's full support for judicious and speedy action against all evil forces working in the country.
“The key to success lies in the whole-hearted participation of society and ensuring harmony among all intelligence and law-enforcement agencies at every level,” said Gen Raheel while speaking at a special meeting of the Punjab apex committee held at the corps headquarters in Lahore.
“Failure to eliminate all manifestations of extremism and terrorism at the grass roots level is not an option, no matter what the cost,” he added.
Besides Gen Raheel and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, senior security and police officials attended the meeting underpinning the importance of civil-military coordination mechanism. Corps commanders from across the province and the ISI chief were also in attendance. The meeting reviewed the prevalent internal security situation in Punjab in the context of the National Action Plan.
The army chief went on to say that the resolve of the national leadership to root out terrorism from our soil would serve as a force multiplier.
On his part, the chief minister appreciated the military’s support and reiterated his government’s resolve to purge terrorism and extremism from the province. He emphasised the importance of joint execution of a comprehensive security plan within the laid down parameters and timelines.
