‘Sharif could be involved in Gen Asif’s death’
Musharraf alleges that Nawaz could be involved in the death of former army chief General Asif.
ISLAMABAD:
Former president and chief of his own faction of the Pakistan Muslim League Pervez Musharraf has alleged that ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif could be involved in the death of former army chief General Asif Nawaz Janjua.
Speaking to journalists by the phone in the federal capital, Musharraf, who recently launched his own All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), came down hard on Sharif, whose government he had toppled in a bloodless coup in October 1999.
“Sharif cannot get along with anyone. He believes in politics of revenge,” Musharraf said. “I’ll give tit-for-tat reply to any misbehaviour from members of Sharif’s party.”
About the recent questionnaire that the government is expected to send him about the Benazir Bhutto assassination case, the former president said it was a closed case as the United Nations has given its report on it. “I haven’t received any questionnaire yet. I’ll see how to reply once I receive it,” he said.
Replying to a question, Musharraf said it was he who had first floated the proposal of unifying all factions of the Muslim Leagues. “Everyone is welcome to join us but I will not request anybody to join my party,” Musharraf said.
Separately, addressing his supporters by phone in Mansehra, Musharraf said the APML would support the creation of new provinces in the country. “If voted to power, we will create new provinces according to the wishes of the people,” Musharraf said.
He said the country was mired in crises, prices of kitchen items were skyrocketing, security situation was deteriorating and political atmosphere was fluid. “We will steer the country out of crises if voted to power in elections,” he added.
Addressing the rally, Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif said that Sharif has stabbed the people of Hazara in the back by supporting the renaming of NWFP as Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
