2008 Mumbai siege: Govt to file plea against Lakhvi’s bail next week

LeT chief remains in custody in the Adiala Jail

ISLAMABAD:
The government will file a petition next week challenging an order granting bail to the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Federal Investigation Agency Special Prosecutor Muhammad Azhar Chaudhry said on Wednesday.

An Anti-Terrorism Court judge in Islamabad granted bail to Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) last week. The decision triggered a furious response from New Delhi and Islamabad swiftly announced it would appeal against it.

“We will file a petition in the Islamabad High Court next week,” Chaudhry told AFP. He added that he had originally planned to file the appeal on Monday, but had to delay it as he had not received a written copy of the bail ruling.

Lakhvi remains in custody in the Adiala jail, Rawalpindi, after the authorities ordered his detention under the Maintenance of Public Order following the bail decision.
