Elevated: Sindh govt to help revive Sharea Faisal expressway project

Minister for local bodies issues directives to restart work on the long delayed road link

KARACHI:
The long delayed project of elevated expressway on Sharea Faisal connecting Quaidabad near National Highway with Jinnah Bridge has been revived with an objective to end traffic congestion on the main thoroughfare of the city.

Sindh Minister for Local Government Sharjeel Memon has given directives to revive the project which had been abandoned seven years ago, Daily Express reported.

The provincial government has assured of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) that it would give required guarantees for the project, sources said.

Following assurances by the provincial government KMC has decided to restart the project and would soon invite tenders, sources said.

The elevated expressway project was initiated during the tenure of former mayor Mustafa Kamal. The city authorities had even engaged a foreign firm for the development of the project. However, for reasons unknown, the project was shelved forcing the foreign company to move court against the KMC.

KMC officials said that the project will help improve the flow of traffic on Sharea Faisal. KMC Director General Technical Services Niaz Soomro said the elevated expressway project has been revived on the directives of Minister for Local Government Sharjeel Memon.

The 30 kilometre long and 58 feet wide expressway will be constructed in patches of 400 metres over a period of three years. The expressway will reduce the travelling time between Jinnah Bridge and Quaidabab by almost 30 minutes, sources said.

Moreover, it would facilitate flow of heavy vehicles without causing any traffic jams.
