Provincial govt intends to operate 170 buses in Karachi

ISLAMABAD:
Submitting a report in the suo motu case regarding protection of environment, the Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department apprised the Supreme Court of their decision to regularise school vehicles in the province.

The report stated that the provincial government intends to operate 170 buses on different routes of Karachi, adding that it has already approved a scheme for operation of 500 buses on intercity routes to connect Karachi with other big cities of the province.

“To address the issue of non-healthy atmosphere and prevent entrance of heavy traffic in the cities, the transport department is establishing modern terminals at Karachi, Thatta, Badin and Miro Khan in first phase,” says the report.


The construction of bus terminal at Thatta road and Miro Khan is under process and revenue department has already allotted 100 acres of land in Scheme 33 for construction of terminal in Karachi, it added.

The report further states the department is also establishing trucking terminals of international standard through private partnership on all three gateways of Karachi at a cost of Rs30 billion, adding that the agreement has  been signed as well.

“The provincial government has initiated concrete steps to revitalise the Karachi Circular Railway and to provide Light Rail Mass Transportation Service at high level demand corridors, and the project is likely to start soon along with BRT corridors,” the report further stated. The transport department has also decided to weed out old model buses through induction of new buses as well as establishment of bus terminal at Sohrab Goth through private partnership.
