Medical education: Sheikh Zayed students protest

Our Correspondent December 22, 2014

LAHORE: A meeting of the Institution Review Board (IRB) was cancelled at the Sheikh Zayed Medical and Dental College after postgraduate students staged a protest demonstration against the head of the Technical Review Committee (TRC). The students demanded the IRB and the TRC to be changed. They said their appointments violated PMDC rules as a professor of dentistry was not authorised to head the board and the constitution. The IRB meeting was called to review some 10 synopsis and thesis of third year MD and MS students, when some 50 students holding placards arrived outside the auditorium. Students demanded immediate reconstitution of the committee. Doctors demanded the appointment of a professor from field of medicine or surgery. It is pertinent to mention that Chairman Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Medical and Dental College Chairman Farrukh Iqbal had earlier told The Express Tribune that demands of students would be met and a committee would reconstituted soon. “Dr Khan is a senior doctor, from whom postgraduate students have greatly benefited,” he had said.
