Visionary forum: Counter-terrorism proposals put forward

Participants at the 42nd Pakistan Visionary Forum Conference on Monday finalised recommendations to rid the nation of terrorism.



The proposals have been devised by former Colonel Mahmood Shah of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), former Intelligence Bureau (IB) director general Shabbir Ahmed, Justice (retd) Sharif Hussain Bokhari, former minister Qayyum Nizami, former Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Foundation managing director Mansoor Ahmed and former International Monetary Fund (IMF) adviser Khalid Salim among others. The proposals recommend closure of “substandard” seminaries, giving exemplary punishment to terrorists by holding speedy trials, rigorous auditing of seminaries and NGOs, the establishment of government-sponsored alternative seminaries, the establishment of a metropolitan police, the facilitation of effective coordination between law enforcement agencies, raising public awareness regarding security measures by media, the allocation of funds to procure surveillance equipment, de-weaponisation, good governance and mass employment through the promotion of labour intensive industries, eradicating terrorists’ training points and destroying their supply lines.
