The winter wardrobe
The Express Tribune guide on what to wear this winter for men and women.
How to wear: Scarf
For the more conservative dresser, patterned scarves in muted colours or plain ones (like Adrian Grenier’s) are a great addition to a sweater and pair of jeans. Steer clear of keffeiyahs this season or garish printed scarves that don’t suit your skin tone.
How to wear: Leather jacket
Whether it’s a biker jacket or a basic leather one, everyone should own a leather jacket. Choose a lightweight one if you live in Karachi, check the quality of the lining and ensure the jacket is well fitted around your shoulders and arms. Wear it with a basic white t-shirt and jeans like Cindy Crawford or over a cotton dress.
How to wear: Argyle
The argyle print manages to emerge every season. Instead of opting to go the Rishi Kapoor route (think loud patterned sweaters), opt for cardigans with a minimum of argyle patterns like this Perry Ellis one and choose cardigans with contrasting trims to add a slight flair. Wear with a plain white shirt and khakis or black jeans.
How to wear : Velvet
Invest in a velvet jacket in black, as it is a safe colour that looks good on just about everyone. Wear with slim-cut trousers and a sober tie ala Rahul Khanna at an awards show in Mumbai. The look is formal, so don’t mix a velvet jacket with jeans or khakis.
How to wear : Orange
Take a cue from Chuck Bass (“Gossip Girl”) and adopt bright colours into your wardrobe. Orange accessories and clothes have been spotted on numerous fashionistas. If you’re wearing orange, neutralise the
effect with a pair of khakis or cargo pants and don’t wear a scarf. Let the colour do the talking.
How to wear : Fur
Sana Hashwani beats the cold during a trip to Shanghai in a coat with a massive fur collar. Whether it’s real or faux fur, it helps add a touch of vintage glamour to an outfit and looks great paired with jeans, a long cotton or linen tunic and even as a fur jacket over a sari.
