Welcome initiative: Cops get respite from hard work

Common room, badminton courts set up at police lines

LAHORE:
Policemen have lapped up the introduction of a common room and two badminton courts at police lines that were inaugurated by IGP Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera on December 2.  The common room is equipped with two LCD televisions and board games including chess and ludo. The room has a dedicated sitting area and a reading corner stocked with newspapers and magazines.

Mobasher Ali, a constable, told The Express Tribune that the introduction of the facilities had delighted the force. He said it had enabled policemen to become cognisant of latest national and international developments by providing them with a space to watch television and read.

Constable Ahsan Afzal said he preferred unwinding in the room by watching cricket and soaps at the room instead of going to his rented abode when he was off-duty. Another constable said all leading newspapers and magazines were available at the room.

Constable Shahbaz Ahmad said his favourite day of the week was Friday as a movie show was organised there between 5 and 8pm. Constable Umar Farooq said he particularly liked two fish in the aquariums.

Common Room in charge SI Muhammad Aslam said policemen had responded enthusiastically to the initiative. He said movie evenings were being held regularly and proposals to hold chess and ludo tournaments were being considered.

Headquarters SP Omer Saeed, who conceived the project, said the initiative had been taken to boost the morale of the force by providing them with a conducive environment. Saeed said he visited the common room daily to ensure that standards were being maintained and policemen were being provided with all kinds of facilities. He said he encouraged them to submit suggestions regarding the introduction of more facilities. He said two SIs had been tasked with answering the queries of policemen in different shifts at the common room.

Saeed said space had also been reserved for a gymnasium near the common room. He said the gymnasium was scheduled to start functioning in a few months. Saeed said the facility would be furnished with state-of-the-art equipment and amenities. He said the initiatives would foster a positive change by providing policemen with an superior working environment and helping them perform better.

Constable Sher Ali said the introduction of badminton courts at police lines had delighted him as he had been unable to indulge in his passion earlier due to financial constraints. He said the establishment of the courts had satiated his desire by enabling him to play badminton with his colleagues after work.

Constable Farooq said the courts were world class. He said he will request SP Saeed to organise a tournament there.
