VVIP security: Funds released to procure seven vehicles for police

Four double cabin pickups and three jeeps to be purchased.

LAHORE:
The government has released a Rs86 million supplementary grant to enable police to procure seven new vehicles for the provision of VVIP security, The Express Tribune has learnt.

The government released the funds after police had forwarded a summary regarding the purchase.

The police had stated in the summary that several vehicles purchased earlier for the purpose had been rendered inoperable.

The department asked the government to facilitate the provision of adequate arrangements to ensure foolproof security for VVIPs. Police requested the immediate release of funds to finance the purchase of the vehicles to complement efforts of the Special Branch and the Security Division who were tasked with the duty of providing VVIP security.

Secretary to Chief Minister Imadudullah Bosal had penned a letter to the Home Department in this regard. The chief minister has approved the purchase of four double cabin pick-ups and three jeeps for the Security Division and the Special Branch respectively.

The government had earlier stopped all departments from purchasing new vehicles as part of an austerity drive. The chief minister had refused to approve a proposal regarding the purchase of 200 vehicles by various departments that had been sanctioned by the austerity committee.
