Cec selection: Man fined for wasting court’s time

ISLAMABAD:
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday fined a petitioner Rs20,000, terming his petition challenging the appointment of the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sardar Raza Khan frivolous. Dismissing the petition filed by Shahid Orakzai, Justice Athar Minallah fined him for wasting the court’s time. Previously IHC’s registrar office had also objected to the petition, saying the petitioner has no ‘locus standi’ in this matter. The judge, while hearing the petition, expressed annoyance and said the post of CEC had been lying vacant since long and has been filled in accordance with the procedure by mutual consent. He observed that the petitioner has wasted the court’s time that may have been used for hearing cases of genuine litigants. The petitioner contended before the court that while appointing the new CEC, no meaningful consultation was done between the government and opposition but the petition was dismissed.
