Polio vaccinator shot dead in Faisalabad

Jundullah militant group claimed responsibility for the killing

FAISALABAD:

Gunmen shot dead a polio vaccinator in a residential neighbourhood of Faisalabad on Tuesday. According to officials, two gunmen riding on a motorcycle opened fire on Sarfraz Ahmad, 48-year-old schoolteacher, as he started vaccinating children in Peoples Colony.

Sarfraz was fatally wounded and was driven to a hospital, where he expired. The gunmen fled the scene unidentified and unchallenged even though the main Peoples Colony bazaar was packed with shoppers at the time.

Faryad Cheema, SHO Peoples Colony police station, said that Sarfraz had survived a similar attack about five months back. “Apparently, Sarfraz’s killing is the outcome of some personal feud,” he added.

Contradicting Cheema’s claim, the Jundullah militant group claimed responsibility for the killing.

“These people [polio workers] are not safe anywhere as our mujahideen are present in every corner of the country,” the group’s spokesperson, Amadullah Marwat, told DI Khan-based journalists in a phone call.
