The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) decided on Tuesday to launch a country-wide protest movement from December 17 against the constitution of an unsatisfactory joint investigation team (JIT) to investigate the June 17 Model Town violence.
The decision was taken in a meeting convened on the direction of PAT chief Tahirul Qadri. A PAT spokesman told The Express Tribune that a strategy had been formulated in this regard and would be announced on December 17. He said country-wide protests would be staged to mark the passing of six months since the incident. The spokesman said rallies would be held nationwide to mark the occasion. The spokesperson said the fact that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was complicit in the violence was apparent from his decision not to make public the findings of a judicial commission regarding the incident. He said the party would also invite its allies to join the protests.
Secretary General Khurram Gandapur said violence in Faisalabad had shown that the government had made a habit of using force against citizens.
