Late Babar, Haris Suleman 'inspire' donors to give $3.1m for schools in Pakistan
With the extra money, plans now include building two campuses in Okara and one just outside Islamabad
INDIANA:
Five months after father-son duo Babar and Haris Suleman perished while flying around the world to raise money for underprivileged children in Pakistan, the campaign has collected a staggering $3.1 million, NBC News reported on Tuesday.
Babar Suleman and his teenage son Haris Suleman had reportedly raised over one million dollars when their single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza went down near Pago Pago, the American Samoa Islands on July 24, 2014. Had they completed the journey, Haris would have set the record for youngest pilot in command to circumnavigate the earth.
Before this project was launched, Haris was an active volunteer at the US chapter of the The Citizens Foundation (TCF), a non-profit which builds and supports schools for underprivileged children in Pakistan.
With the extra money raised, which includes about $2.4 million raised through a single donor, plans now include building two campuses: one in the family's hometown of Okara and the other, just outside of Islamabad.
The donations will also pay for staff, materials and maintenance, said Amjad Noorani, an adviser to the foundation's board.
Haris had been posthumously conferred the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by President Mamnoon Hussain.
