Bad end: Two ‘robbers’ killed in police encounter
One of them was accused of murdering a police inspector in 1996.
FAISALABAD:
The police claimed to have killed two robbers in an encounter in the Samanabad area on Monday night.
City Police Officer Sohail Habib Tajik told The Express Tribune on Tuesday that Factory Area police had arrested Maulvi Babar alias Babri, a resident of Katchi Abad in D-Type Colony, and his accomplice Bilawal, a resident of Khurarianwala, for robbery a few days ago.
He said Sub Inspector Liaqat, who is in-charge of investigation at Factory Area police station, accompanied the police team when the men were arrested. The CPO said they were on their way to the police station when they were waylaid by five of the robbers’ accomplices. They attacked the police car and helped the two robbers escape, he said. They also seized an SMG rifle from a policeman and fled. “The policemen were taken unawares.”
The CPO said that Babri and Bilawal then snatched a motorcycle from a man near Jawala Nagar Railway Phatak and went towards Samanabad.
Samanabad police saw them from afar and signalled them to stop but they shot at the police, he said. Police returned the fire and Babri and Bilawal received bullet injuries.
He said the police was taking them to a hospital for treatment when they passed away. Samanabad police also seized the stolen rifle and motorcycle. The bodies have been sent to a mortuary for post mortem examination, the CPO said.
“Babri and Bilawal were proclaimed offenders and were wanted in several cases of robberies, murder and other heinous crimes. Locals called Babri ‘Bari Gun’... he is also accused of killing Inspector Hajji Idrees in 1996”, the CPO said.
