LNG import strategy discussed
Energy sub-committee says incorrect estimates need to be avoided.

The energy sub-committee on Thursday discussed in detail the import strategy for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) that would help mitigate the energy crisis in the country.
Federal Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar chaired the meeting, while Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Mohammad Asif were also present.
The focus of the discussion during the meeting mainly revolved around import of 600 mmcfd of LNG, according to press statement issued by the finance ministry.
It was decided during the meeting that the imported quantity of LNG will be divided between Sui Southern Gas (200mmcfd) and Sui Northern Gas (400mmcfd) for the production of around 2,800MW of electricity on average when supplied to different power plants.
During the meeting, members of the sub-committee decided that after the import of LNG, expensive diesel plants will only be used during the peak periods so as to save the people from inconvenience due to power outages.
Dar asked the other ministers to work together closely so as to avoid incorrect estimates and other misconceptions. The decisions should be taken in the larger interest of the country, he added.
Secretary petroleum also shared the gas management plan with participants that aim to ensure maximum availability of gas to all key sectors.
Secretary water and power discussed the plan from the viewpoint of minimising load-shedding in the country and lowering tariffs.
