Unprovoked Indian firing: PM urged to raise truce violations at SAARC
Members of Senate Defence Committee visit villages hit by Indian shelling
ISLAMABAD:
Senate Defence Committee Chairman Mushahid Hussain Sayed urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to raise the issue of ceasefire violations by Indian troops at the upcoming summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Kathmandu, Nepal, next week.
Members of the bipartisan panel, who visited villages along the Working Boundary near Sialkot on Wednesday, condemned the ‘unprovoked’ Indian shelling on Pakistani civilians.
They were given a detailed briefing by Director General Punjab Rangers, Maj Gen Khan Tahir Javaid Khan on the Indian aggression across the 193-kilometre-long Working Boundary which has escalated tension along the entire 1,187-kilometre border with India in the Punjab.
Senator Mushahid and Senator Mohsin Leghari also toured the border villages affected by Indian shelling, including Dhamala, which is just 60 metres from the nearest Indian military post.
They met officers and Jawans of the Pakistan Rangers and appreciated their dedication, morale and courage in defending the homeland. “Together they raised slogans of ‘Pakistan Zindabad, Pakistan Rangers Zindabad, Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad,” according to a statement issued by the Senate Defence Committee.
Speaking to the media, Mushahid said that ever since the Narendra Modi took office, there had been a distinct change in the tone, language, actions and attitude of India. He termed it “aggressive and hawkish, reflecting an anti-Pakistan mindset rooted in religious extremism”.
