Power companies: Protesters hit out at privatisation plan

Hiring of someone from private sector will clear way for employee layoffs in the name of downsizing, says protesters

ISLAMABAD:

Workers of the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) staged a protest here on Wednesday against planned privatisation of Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) and expected appointment of the utility’s chief executive from the private sector.

According to a press release, members of the Hydro Electric Central Labour Union gathered outside the Islamabad Press Club and protested for the entire day to press for putting a halt to the privatisation of power distribution companies and government’s move to appoint the chief executive of IESCO from the private sector.

Led by the association’s Regional Chairman, Javed Baloch and Zonal Chairman Haji Zahir Gul, the protesters were of the view that hiring of someone from the private sector would clear the way for employee layoffs in the name of downsizing or rightsizing as happened when other state enterprises were sold.

They would continue to protest against the privatisation of power companies across the country.
