The bench, comprising Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi and Justice Athar Minallah, accepted a petition filed by Nabeela Tahir, seeking the recovery of her husband, and directed Operations SSP Asmatullah Junejo, Kohsar SHO Iqbal Khan and NAB Investigation Officer Mohammad Tariq to appear before the court on November 20 and produce Tahir Mehmood Abbasi, a local businessman who was picked up by NAB officials on November 11.
In her petition, Nabeela maintained that on November 11, 2014, she went shopping in Jinnah Super Market with her husband and daughter. While the family was returning home, a Toyota van carrying about 12 people intercepted their car and ‘abducted’ her husband. She informed the court that they picked up her husband without identifying themselves and alleged that she and her daughter were manhandled when they tried to intervene. The petitioner said that she also lodged an FIR with the Kohsar police. The petitioner added that on November 13, Tariq called and told the family that Abbasi was in NAB custody in a fraud case. She requested the court to declare the detention of Abbasi illegal and direct the Kohsar police to arrest Tariq.
The other side
NAB spokesman Nawazish Ali Asim told The Express Tribune that Abbasi had defaulted on a Rs7.9million loan from National Bank of Pakistan (NBP). Asim said Abbasi had taken a loan from the bank in 2011 and did not pay back a single penny. The arrest was made after following legal procedures and that the suspect is currently in NAB custody on seven-day physical remand, which will expire on November 21, the spokesperson added. Kohsar SHO Khan was not available from comment.
