June 17 riots: Govt to explain commission’s legality

LAHORE:
A Lahore High Court (LHC) full bench on Monday granted two weeks’ time to the federal and Punjab governments to reply to a petition challenging the legality of the one-judge commission that had probed the June 17 violence in Model Town. The bench consisting of Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan, Justice Anawarul Haq and Justice Abdus Sattar Asghar heard several petitions questioning the tribunal’s legality. When the hearing started on Monday, law officers representing the governments sought time to submit their replies. The bench then adjourned hearing until December 1. Advocate Aftab Ahmad Bajwa has filed the petition saying that the constitution of tribunals comprising superior court judges harms the judiciary. He says several judicial commissions have been formed in the past but their recommendations have not been implemented. He says governments use such commissions to protect their wrongdoings.
