KARACHI: Inconsistencies in the process of teacher appointments and promotions have led the Karachi University to a situation where around 75 per cent of the teachers are now considered junior faculty of the ranks of assistant professors or lecturers.

Aspiring for betterment through effective teachers' representation in the university's administrative affairs, more than 775 teachers of the varsity will vote tomorrow (November 19) to elect six office-bearers and 15 executive council members of the Karachi University Teachers' Society (Kuts). Three groups are running for the annual polls - the Karachi University Teachers Forum, the Karachi University Teachers' Guild and the Educational Forum.

The Karachi University Teachers Forum that had made a clean sweep in the last year's election has again nominated sitting president Prof Dr Jamil Hassan Kazmi for the top slot. Dr Kazmi will contest the election against Prof Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat of the Educational Forum and Prof Dr Aqeel Ahmed of the Karachi University Teachers' Guild.

"Strengthening the faculty was our first priority during the previous year and will take precedence if I was entrusted this responsibility again," Dr Kazmi told The Express Tribune. "We are working hard to reduce this significant age and experience disparity with increased scholarship opportunities for the young ones in pursuance of their doctoral studies."

The committee organising the elections includes Dr Anila Amber Malik from the university's psychology department, Prof Shamim Ahmed Sheikh from the geology department and Prof Dr Akhter Baloch from the public administration department.

Meanwhile, Dr Abid Azhar who is director general at the Dr AQ Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering will serve as the returning officer in the elections.
