Mithadar police catch officer collecting extortion

Suspect involved in 22 cracker blasts also arrested by the CID

A police inspector accused of collecting extortion was caught red-handed by the Mithadar police on Friday.

Inspector Muhammad Urs, son of Khamiso Khan, was collecting extortion from a complainant, Muhammad Shabbir, when the police caught him. SSP Sheeraz Nazeer said that Rs50,000 were also recovered from his possession. Nazeer said that Urs is a police inspector posted at the Anti-Violent Crime Cell, adding that he had extorted Rs150,000. A case for extortion has been registered against him.

Separately, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed to have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in more than 22 cases of cracker blasts in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. His arrest was disclosed during a press conference held at the CID office in Garden police headquarters on Friday evening.

CID DSP Chaudhry Safdar said that the accused, identified as Sansar Ali Abro, is associated with a nationalist party of Sindh and has been involved in more than 22 cases of attacks at railway lines in Karachi and other parts of the province. The officer also claimed to have recovered six kilogrammes of explosives, two hand grenades, detonators and a pistol from his possession. A case has been registered.

Separately, a suspect involved in the murder case of Preedy police SHO Ghazanfar Kazmi was killed in an encounter with the police in Baldia Town. The alleged encounter took place in Madina Colony area when the Saeedabad police conducted a raid on a tip-off. The deceased suspect was identified as Riaz. His companion, Arsalan, was arrested by the District West police on Tuesday. He revealed that his companion, Omar Zaman, had planned to kill the SHO out of revenge as he had arrested him in a case of fraud and sent him to jail. Riaz was given the task of attacking Kazmi.


Saeedabad SHO Naveed Nasir said that the raid was conducted on the basis of information provided by the arrested suspect, Arsalan. He added that the key suspect, Zaman, and his accomplice, Anwar, have yet to be arrested. Further investigations are under way.

In a separate incident, an alleged criminal, identified as Waqar, was killed. Aziz Bhatti police said that three suspects were trying to flee after a robbery attempt when the police arrested one of them in an injured condition. The other two managed to escape under the cover of fire. Waqar later died during treatment at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Separately, the Napier police claim to have arrested three members of a Lyari-based gang. They were identified as Zikria alias Jahanzeb alias Jojo, Majid and Majid alias Joji. SSP Sheeraz Nazeer said that Zikria was involved in various cases of target killings including the murders of Pakistan Peoples Party workers in Lyari. According to Nazeer, the accused was also wanted by the police in the murder case of a sub-inspector, Rafiq Baloch. Zikria was an important gunman of the Sheraz Comrade Group.

Meanwhile, two teenagers associated with a Lyari-based gang were arrested by the Garden police after an exchange of fire. Police officials said that a group of gangsters had forcibly appointed them to snatch mobile phones and motorcycles and paid them a daily 'wage' of Rs2,000. They added that the gangsters tortured them via electric shocks if they refused to comply. Weapons were also recovered from their possession. Police officials, while quoting the suspects, said that over 20 people between the ages of 14 to 18 years are being forced to work for the gangsters.
