Initial squad for Champions Trophy announced

PHF includes seven junior players; Korean tour cancelled due to lack of funds

KARACHI:
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announced an initial 20-member squad for the forthcoming Champions Trophy that is scheduled to run from December 6 to 14 in Bhubaneswar, India.

Muhammad Imran will captain a side that includes seven junior players — Amjad Ali, Zohaib Ashraf, Tasawwar Abbas, Ali Shan, Muhammad Arsalan, Yaqoob Azfar and Rizwan Ali.

According to chief selector Islahuddin Siddiqui, Muhammad Rizwan and Rashid Mehmood – who have yet to return from their stint in the Netherlands– will only have to pass the fitness test to join the team, as their participation in an ‘A’ division league proves their good form.

“The final 18-member squad will be announced on November 26 after the final trials,” said Islahuddin.

PHF Secretary General Rana Mujahid also announced the cancellation of the team’s South Korean tour due to a lack of finds and visa issues. “We have asked Korea if the series can be arranged after the Champions Trophy,” said Mujahid.

Meanwhile, Rizwan Jr was fined Rs100,000 for failing to bring his team jersey in the Asian Games final against India, while Tasawwar Abbas has been directed to pay Rs15,000 for his late arrival to the training camp.
