Model Town tragedy: PAT rejects new JIT
Raheeq Abbasi says the JIT head is close to the PML-N
LAHORE:
Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) has rejected the new joint investigation team (JIT) formed to investigate the Model Town clashes, Express News reported.
Punjab government on Thursday, after negotiations with Minhaj-ul-Quran had formed a new JIT under CCPO Quetta Abdur Razzaq Cheema, for the investigation of the Model Town tragedy.
The team will investigate PM Nawaz Sharif, CM Punjab Shahbaz Sharif and other government minister named in the FIR lodged by PAT.
PAT leader Raheeq Abbasi while talking to Express News said his party rejected the new investigation team, and will not take part in its inquiry.
“The government agreed that the JIT head should be the one who’s trusted by PAT,” he said. “But we have objections over Cheema.”
Abbasi said Cheema is from Punjab and very close to the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif; hence an impartial inquiry under him was not possible.
“We cannot accept an investigation team constituted to safeguard the PML-N, and its leaders.”
The Awami Tehreek leader added that his party had no objections over Shahid Hayat, or any other person nominated by IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Nasir Durrani as the investigation team's head.
On June 17, a clash between Minhaj's supporters and the Punjab police claimed the lives of 14 people, while many others were left injured.
