The ruling elite is responsible for all the problems facing the country, Jamaat-i-Islami ameer Sirajul Haq said on Wednesday.
Addressing Lahore High Court Bar Association on Wednesday, Haq said that the constitution of the country had been under assault. “Those who were responsible for its protection violated it with impunity. The foremost duty of any government is to uphold the constitution. However, people in the echelons of power trampled upon the national consensus,” he said.
“The rulers have plundered the country’s wealth and given rise to many problems facing the masses. We want the rule of law, not the rule of nawabs, vaderas and capitalists,” he said.
The JI chief praised the role of the lawyers’ community in the restoration of democracy. “At a time, when nobody dared speak against Pervez Musharraf and several political parties were vying for a place under his umbrella, the lawyers came out as a storm and shattered the myth of the dictator’s power,” he said. Haq said that the government should not wait for the end of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s sit-in. “The government should honour its commitment for setting up an electoral reforms commission, the reconstitution of the Election Commission and a judicial commission to probe rigging allegations,” he said.
