LAHORE: A passerby was killed and a man was injured by robbers who fired shots in Ichhra Market to intimidate people in the area on Tuesday.

Police said five men had barged into a jewellery shop in Ichhra Market and held its owner at gunpoint. They were stuffing jewellery in bags when one of the employees at the shop tried to sneak out to warn other shopkeepers in the area. Police said that the robbers shot at the employee but missed and hit a passerby in the eye. The deceased was identified as Khayal Khan, 16, a resident of Quetta, who was in town to visit his brother. One of the robbers’ bullets pierced the abdomen of Badar, another passerby.

Traders and relatives of the deceased staged a demonstration against police for not providing them security. They stormed Ichhra police station and then blocked Ferozepur Road for traffic two hours.

Police visited the scene and assured protesters that they will arrest the culprits. An FIR regarding the incident had not been registered till the filing of the report. Police said they were waiting for the aggrieved families to file a complaint.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the boy’s murder and has sought a report from the Operations DIG. He has ordered police to arrest the robbers at the earliest and to provide Badar the best possible treatment.
