LAHORE:

Lahore High Court on Monday stopped the Excise and Taxation Department from collecting the luxury tax from owners of large houses.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah gave the federal government until November 20 to submit its reply.

The lawyer for the petitioners had earlier told the court that the government was already receiving property tax from owners of houses that were larger than two kanals. “There cannot be double taxation,” he said, adding that such a move would be illigal. The government’s lawyer requested the court for more time for submitting a detailed reply in the case. The court then adjourned the hearing until November 20.
