But wait. What about the Allied Hospital in Faisalabad? The largest hospital in the third largest city of Pakistan, and the second largest city of Punjab, has one of the highest child mortality rates in the country. But this is central, urban Punjab, you may say. This is the most developed region of Pakistan, run by the self-proclaimed most efficient government in the country. And yet, little babies are dying in this hospital at an alarming rate. Why?
Well, two reasons jump up immediately. One, the facilities at the children’s ward are woefully inadequate for the number of patients that pour in from the city and its surrounding areas. Two, of the facilities available, equipment is out of order, or lying in stores unused, and doctors are ill-trained to deal with babies.
What? In Faisalabad? This is hardcore PML-N territory. And under the watch of the dynamic chief minister — who’s been the chief minister since dinosaurs roamed the earth — more than 2,000 kids have died this year alone. This fact hits you like a punch in the gut. Why are incubators for the infants not in working order? Why are there not enough of them? Why is the children’s ward short of beds to cater to the number of patients? Why are there not hospitals in smaller cities so people do not have to bring their kids to Faisalabad? Ah, well here’s where the plot thickens.
Or doesn’t. Ask the PML-N leaders and their reaction is two-fold: a) Total denial of reality and rejection of all allegations; b) lack of funds. As it turns out, both are — to put it mildly — sickening.
Their denial is typical of the mentality they sport like their big moustaches and bigger egos. They are simply unwilling to admit their blunders and face up to the bitter truth that they care more for concrete structures than for human lives. They then have the gall to say they do not have enough money to build hospitals to save lives! Not enough money? Billions and billions spent on bridges, flyovers, underpasses and overheads, but no money to save the lives of little babies?
No sirs, it’s not the money you do not have, it’s your sense of priority that is missing. And this warped priority is what is wrecking the future of our country: rulers investing in bricks and mortar instead of flesh and bones. The little babies who writhed in pain and died in the arms of their grief-stricken parents in that hospital in Faisalabad, died so that the PML-N government in Punjab could build shiny Metro buses and glitzy flyovers. Try suppressing the stench of this reality with the imagined fragrance of the Punjab government’s development model.
And the infants in Thar are breathing their last because the corrupt and incompetent PPP government has even sold its conscience to the highest bidder. The tragedy unfolding in Thar is beyond comprehension. And every time one thinks the PPP cannot plunge to greater depths, it does. How else would anyone explain the horrifying and shameful fact that the wheat bags sent by the Sindh government for the starving people of Sindh turned out to be full of dirt.
The deaths of little babies in Thar and Faisalabad are a reflection of a very morbid reality that we face: we have ballotted our future into the hands of a very ordinary set of people. Since 1947, we have been living through a series of crises, but it’s only much later that we realise the sheer magnitude of the disaster that we endured. It is only now when we look back do we realise how the musical chairs of the 1950s and the selfish politics by landed pygmies led to the rule of the generals. Those who lived through the times perhaps did not have a full idea of the train wreck they were experiencing. Similarly, it was much later that the nation realised how the civil and military leadership had conspired to trigger the shameful events of 1971 and the loss of half the country. History teaches us much.
But clearly not enough. We are now passing through a similar crisis where the damage done by rulers will make itself evident in the coming years and decades. These rulers have cloaked themselves in democratic legitimacy, but the ruin they are bringing upon this bruised and battered nation is unimaginable. People say give democracy a chance and let the system evolve. Sure, tell that to the parents who buried their little babies. Tell them it’s okay because their kids died for the glory of democracy; that the little ones suffered pain and death on those filthy beds in rat-infested hospitals so that the PPP and the PML-N could enjoy the fruits of democracy in their luxury four-wheelers and palatial offices.
What is happening in Thar is not negligence — it’s a crime. Ditto for Faisalabad. But do you see the Sindh and Punjab governments going into crisis mode? Do you see Bilawal Zardari and Shahbaz Sharif camping in Thar and Faisalabad and fixing the broken system they lord over? Do you see any sign, any movement, any gesture that would suggest that these governments and those who run them have any concern for the little babies who are dying because they are not being given the treatment they require?
If the answer is a no — which it most certainly is — then know this: we are being forced to take a selfie with a gun. And this kind of selfie does not end well.

A well written article bt wil like to point out that first of all we didn't ballot these people into power they cheated their way in and secondly pmln and PPP are extremely corrupt hence this mix up of priorities it's a money game that is why sooo much negligence every where they have sold their conscience to the devil...
@Xman: Public opinion in KPK suggests contrary to what you are proposing here BTW.
Charismatically summarized a true picture of the so called democratic political arena!
Russians were sent home by Somalian 1978. Northern Somalia, has a huge Range-land, rain fall with 3 years interval, people have Sheep Goats Camels. They may graze the palatable grass and left the unpalatable one. FAO, prepared for Range land development project .This project was financed by Quaith Funds for 5 years. Myself from Pakistan was appointed as Manager to deal with. We initially prepared 10X10 km fenced areas, where shrubs and fodder trees were planted by .More wells were drudged to retain rain water. This area was allowed when drought, but plants being protected, seeded and spread all around by natural air all .around. Cut short all resulted in greenery, for feed for livestock. Health Livestock productive. We convinced the government to, export male livestock to near by across the sea, Emma rat in Dubai etc, earn more money day by day more greenery, no food problem By the time we left Somalia Africa, they were exporting 500 million US $ worth of livestock Why cant we do it Thar Sind. Because Range land management is not cared for. Forestry don't own it, livestock dame care its development is their responsibilities. Thus 50% area all over in country stay neglected, thus no greenery no rains. I can give a presentation on this, please call me deliver lecture and a short term consultancy shall prepare [project how to stop
@Zain: Making roads is not the solution. Fahd Hussain has clearly mentioned that the adjoining areas need to have hospitals where basic treatments must be available, but unfortunately our rulers are more interested in show-sha rather than solving the very basic problems of the common people. One solution is to have local bodies, its the job of local representatives to look after basic sanitary, health and other basic infrastructures' matters. But sadly, it does not suit our ruling elites which include elected members and bureaucrats ...
The leaders who are investing in the future of their own children have little interest in the future of our children.
Construction of Hospitals in far flung villages may not be feasible but there are other solutions like: 1. Providing flying hospitals/clinics/Doctor. This needs a Helicoptor, basic medicines, emergency operation tools, a Doctor, a nurse and a pilot. It can provide immediate medical attention and also transport serious patient to nearby city. This facility can be at the cost of provincial Govt. Will this be costlier than contruction of roads/bridges? 2. Installing solar panel for each village to provide electricity for basic needs. 3. Giving priority to construct water pipeline instead of road/bridge for bring water from far flung water depository or river.
These are few small suggestions which can be undertaken by NGOs without depending on Govt aid. We do not have dearth of NGOs. A cluster of nearby villages can be taken by each NGO to provide these facilities or a group of NGOs can coordinate their efforts ofr these facilities. Is it too much to ask for from the philanthropists?
How long we will continue to complain about the Govt's despodency? Can't we act on self help basis?
Thank you Fahd for such a nice article. Thank you because you blamed the 'criminals' for committing the 'crime'. Thank you for not blaming 'us' for empowering the criminals by our votes. You did not blame us for being swayed by slogans, kinship, money and irrationality in voting them into power. You did not blame us for avoiding hospital upto the last moment of hope. You did not blame us for not standing up against the landlords who kept our villages devoid of any basic needs of live. You did not blame us for buying our own life at the cost of our children lives.
Good job: Attending to the symtom not to the desease.
@Zain: unfortunately your comment is a reflection of shameful mindset of NS Dynasty of blaming others and not admitting mistakes. How long this mindset will prevail. Countdown has already begun.
Got bored with the writer. He has no topic except criticizing NS and IK wah wah. Please Fahad write on something more constructive.
Very right about priorities. Think of the senseless millions spent for the Sindh Festival which amounted to nothing and the people from the interior were comlaining of how they were not looked after by the organisers. No words are enough to rue the CM's of Sindh and Punjab - they outdo each other every time. Look at what happened to the Christian couple in the name of "Blasphemy" .
@AM: But media is not impartial either; the people who work in this branch either support one or the other camp act accordingly.

@Dr Nasir ud Din Gohar:
Well said, however, your proposals are more practicable when KPK and Baluchistan separates from the rest since your military can no longer be accomodated or tolerated in these caucasian territories?

Their denial is typical of the mentality they sport like their big moustaches and bigger egos. They are simply unwilling to admit their blunders and face up to the bitter truth that they care more for concrete structures than for human lives....
What else to expect?
Thanks Fahd Hussain for reminding PMLN and PPP their priorities. By the way many in the media and civil society are there to defend them for their criminal negligence.
These shameless political parties have looted nation from last four decades and will continue to do so as they have already made billions from the corruption and it suits them to continue status quo. This requires a continues struggle from the media and people against this so called democracy which is only serving the rich and elite class. This system is ruthless and poor children will be dying for next coming decades also, if the system is not drastically changed in order to cater for the need of poor people of Pakistan.
It is an eye opening for the people and government. It is the time to fix check list of priorities for the sake of humanity.Untill and unless , we don't have an independent accountability institution .No one is under surveillance and pressure, that is why government people exploit the authority and manipulate the government funds fore their personal vested interest rather than for the welfare of common people. It is the real time for people to wake up the nation against autocracy.
In my view, the remedy to many issues like the ones we all are crying for is to invest on our human development. What I mean is to give the importance to the education, health and development of science and technology. Also, highlight the issues related to the rural development. Our country does not comprise of only Karachi and Lahore. It is our entire Pakistan starting from northern areas to Gawadder. We should also focus on development of the tourismin our country but before that we should get out of this so called "war on terror". It is not our issue rather that of our "masters". It is their creation and their headache. We should focus on the development of our poor masses. In sha Allah, one day Pakistan would be a great county provided we get rid of this monster so called "war on terror". Our society used to be a very tolerant society.
NS knows it very well that dictators in this country had left a legacy of blackmailers who's only purpose is criticism for the sake if criticism. In opposite situation their cameras would have been traveling seeking out potholes, accident scenes, dilapidated transport system etc etc.So dears,NS has a strong economic vision for this country and above all the realization that there are many who's interests conflict with his economic agenda Thus he isn't going to be blackmailed by such elements anymore. Those who don't realize the importance of infrastructure development should google a little before blindly praising every criticism against NS.
@Fahad Yours is a hopeless country governed by hope -killers who were voted in by hopeless people. In only your country NAWAZ.. ZARDARI... SHAHBAZ are crowned and people like Imran is dumped. Please Don't blame the rulers. If you have to point fingers point it to yourselves. It's really disgusting.
What? No infant mortality in KPK? So where will PTI be buried? In their container? Coz they "ain't gonna" find a place to even get buried in KPK now.
A good artcle showing apathy of the system
A good article showing the apathy of present rulers......
Very well written Fahd. Hats off. I belong to Tharparkar and I understand how difficult is to live there. People do not have any viable transportation, hospital and infrastructure. Corruption in Sindh government is so engrossed that employment of a class-IV person is sold in lacs. PPP is a curse of Allah on people of Sindh. Taking opportunity of ET I am forwarding a solution to literate people of Sindh and Pakistan on the whole. Government claims that we have a literacy ratio of 25%. If we believe it to be correct then Pakistan has a ray of hope if one literate person takes four illiterate people along in every aspect of life. I realized this 1 to 4 model in last election when my batman family did not vote in last election due to registration of their votes in Lahore instead of Islamabad. I promised myself that in next election I will take four poor families with me to vote in next elections. If we, the so called educated lot of Pakistan, take responsibility and correct our true NORTH, I have a belief that Pakistan will prosper. I don't claim any patent/copy rights on 1 to 4 model but anyone who has a strength may spread this formula and take lead for better future of Pakistan. May Allah bless us all. I hope ET publish my comments for the sake of Pakistan.
fine piece of writing as usual, but i am not in conformity with writer target, to whom writer is trying to inform or seeking an action,i could not find the target to whom it could be addressed, it is not in peoples,it is not in institution, week nation complement week institutions
Negligent and callous attitude against children and young generation should be criticized and condemned regardless of party affiliations, of personal liking and disliking. Every effort should be made to make those responsible of such acts of negligence and indifference answerable to the people. I have witnessed this authors ability to criticize the ruling parties of Punjab and Sindh ad nauseam, but his complete silence and indifference when it comes to indoctrinating the young children through changing curriculum and taking out any content that could encourage critical thinking, particularly in the context of KP, where PTI, the self styled harbinger of change is playing with the future of young generation along with JI. My question is, why this SELECTIVE criticism? Are the children of KP not the children of this Nation...don't they have rights? Are they not entitled to fair education, which would enhance their abilities, like comprehension, analysis and criticism? Please let us have your take on this sensitive issue as well.
Also babies born to poorly nourished mothers in Pakistan are shorter, so we as a nation are people at risk of diminishing average height
PPP and PMLN are not democratic parties but are dynasties. Media is an integral part of democracy and can bring the governments down. Media should force these parties to represent ideas and not personalities. We are making the same mistake with PTI. PTI is nothing without IK. Why is media not running these types of incidents on their 24/7 channels instead of promoting one political party or another?
Thanks Fahad Bhai. Zardari sahib is consideres as The political Genoius of Pakistan. Especially among his supporters (eik zardari sabh par bhari). But I think by neglecting Thar, and focusing on his sons political career only, he has made a great blunder. People of thar are digging graves for their childen; Zardari is digging grave for PPP.
It used to be a party called the PPP. But is got sick and died, after Shaheed Bibi.
very well written article @fahad husain not many people bother to raise these issues.i guess its just not the leadership but as a nation we lack empathy and compassion.i ve done my housejob in allied peadiatrics deptt. and you are quite one of the factor is inadequate skills but the other thing is lack of respect to those poor vulnerable creatures probably they are treated even worse than animals.moreover there is no accountability of anyone either doctors or other staff.we ve an attitude that ALLAH ki mrzi and not to look into our mistakes.its really heart rending but the truth is,this attitude prevails in our healthcare system irrespective of government or private.
Superb. A masterpiece on actual and factual governance in a virtual democracy. A case of sheer criminal negligence. Apathy of the rulers, perhaps, could not be more aptly described. Amazing and magical writing, as usual,Fahd sahib.
It is not important that PML-N and PPP wont admit their blunders. We know what they have done.
What is most important is that both parties, along with status-quo forces, know it very well that they can continue with 'business as usual' as long as they have the power elite in their pockets. One has established an empire in Punjab the other in Sindh.
So keep on yelling, but it wont have much of an effect. And they know it.
Mar Gae Awaam....Per.....Bhutto Abhi Zinda hay...Issi liyay ham sharminda hain.
Always showing the status quo and its supporters the mirror, great job Fahd!
I have to say, I cannot say anything about what you write.
Jiye Bhutto!
Some two weeks back I gave you 3 ' brilliant ' ....now I give you 4 brilliants. The sheer catastrophe that this political system ( 6.6 years ) has proved itself to be is more than evident. What is not evident or possibly deliberately not being understood by some ( because they are beneficiaries ) is that a democratic system is not acceptable when a government that follows a bad one, is even worse than the last.......and correction becomes a necessity. But when the system is so rigged that those who are responsible for the damage are the ones who can initiate the correction...... then correction will not happen and democracy stumbles.
I suppose nobody ever buried their children during dictatorships. The mortality rate during the Musharraf period was a big shiny zero. Dictatorship is always better isn't it? When drones start flying, when heroin and AK-47s start flooding the country, when we go to war with India and end up 'victorious', (for that is what we are taught) when we commit genocide against our own people before losing them and half the country altogether, when we create the inequality that led to the 22 families slogan, when we let the religion genie out of the bottle. Where were you when Musharraf was around? He could have done with a spin doctor like you.
These rulers have forgotten that they have to die. surely they will suffer even more for fate is good teacher. no accountability and no over sight have led to this rot. i hope n pray that people rise and make the rulers accountable for their sins.
Beautiful composition of words to make Monarchs minds awake - Hope so they will one day!
Why would these ferocious rulers even think about the dying children? Rather, they would invest their time and energy in taking measures to secure their own children's future. What else to expect from this gang of serial killers?
A country which does not invest in its children, does not invest in its future.
Seems like Pervaiz Khattak is writing these columns for Fahad. Smart observation in two out of four provinces :)
That's why I supported Musharraf. My conscience is clear. Its our feudal loving voters who put hope in these folks that need to answer. And oh excellent article!
If you had bothered to read the report in detail, it says most infants brought to the hospital were in critical condition and could not have been saved by the incubators (most of which were functional). Parents delay treatment at appropriate place and prefer home based remedies and local quacks and goto the hospital only at the very end. When doctors are unable to save b/c of delay in treatment, they start beating the doctors and protest on the street too.
Not entirely the parents' fault but a lot of it is. Due to large distances, infants are being brought from far flung villages to the equipped hospital. Roads might actually help in this case.
punjabi propoganda is nothing new we know it since 1970 when shaikh mujib and awami league were demonised in the very same way by the then punjabi elitists and establishment and we also know what happened as a result
We have ourselves balloted these rulers of ours. So the process started with our vote given to the people of our choosing, mostly on the basis of emotions and slogans. It is time that the people themselves should come out of a state of denial which is so so rampant in our society, be honest to ourselves, and make choices on rationality. It is a call for action for a change before its too late. People have to take corrective action now and do not depend the dormant rulers. If not, I am afraid our state capital may be shifted to Dubai or London in the near future and we will be ruled from these rulers of ours from there.
Very well written. Fahd very aptly summarised the rotten mindset of our ruling class in this one sentence " they care more for concrete structures than for human lives" I wonder how could their conscience even let them sleep at night. For me they are no different from the barbarians who burnt alive the Christian couple.
