Robbing blast victims: Accountability court grants judicial remand of former nazir

Suspect allegedly involved in embezzling over Rs12 million from compensation money.

PESHAWAR:

An accountability court granted a 14-day judicial remand of a suspect allegedly involved in the embezzlement of over Rs12.65 million allocated as compensation for bomb blast victims in DI Khan.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) produced Muhammad Ghufran, former nazir of the district officer of revenue (DOR), before an accountability court to obtain custody. The court was told Ghufran misappropriated the compensatory funds.

The court granted 14-day judicial remand and sent the suspect to jail.

A statement by the bureau said a complaint was registered, alleging that millions had been embezzled and none of the affected people had received compensation.

Taking action, NAB K-P director general authorised an enquiry. “During the course of the enquiry, it was revealed that Ghufran, in connivance with other suspects, facilitated granting of compensation to non-entitled people on the basis of fake medical certificates. They also went against the government approved list of bomb blast victims, causing a loss of Rs12.65 million,” read the NAB statement.

The suspect was also charged in a departmental enquiry conducted by DI Khan additional commissioner and the K-P Home and Tribal Affairs department.

Five suspects opted for the voluntary return of funds under Section 25 of the NAB Ordinance 1999. Over Rs11 million of Rs12.65 million was recovered.

Former district coordination officer Syed Mohsin Shah returned Rs6,325,000, former DOR Aziaullah Mehsood Rs1,581,000, former tehsildar Qaiser Nawaz 1,581,000, qanungo Saadullah Khan Rs790,625 and naib qanungo Muhammad Abbas Rs790,625.
