Basic rights: Fund set up to tackle bonded labour

A Labour Department spokesman said on Monday a Rs120 million fund had been set up to tackle bonded labour, with special focus on children and women, in Gujranwala.
He said the government had made a plan for improving work conditions in Sialkot, Hafizabad and Gujranwala under the Elimination of Child and Bonded Labour Project. He said in the first phase, a survey would be conducted for identification of the affected families and their problems. He said women would be trained in stitching and special institutes would be set up for children for basic education. Labour Department Director Zaigham Mazhar told The Express Tribune that this would help the government improve literacy rate and eliminate bonded labour in these districts. He said teams had begun conducting surveys in this regard.
