Encounters and raids: Kin identify two of three slain ‘militants’
Separately, a criminal was killed and three others arrested
KARACHI:
The families of two of the three alleged militants killed by the police during a shootout in Sohrab Goth identified them on Saturday. Meanwhile, a street criminal was killed and three arrested in separate incidents in the city.
District Malir police, led by SSP Rao Anwar, carried out a raid at the militant hideout in Quetta Town on Friday when the militants were reportedly preparing for an attack on the main Muharram procession at Tibet Centre. Three alleged militants were killed, while their accomplices, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan-Fazlullah's (TTP) Karachi chief Sultan and commander Qari Noorullah, managed to escape.
Their bodies were later shifted to Edhi morgue, where two of them were identified as Mehmood Khan and Sher Ali by their families. Both were residents of Macchar Colony in Sohrab Goth. The third militant, believed to be a suicide bomber, has yet to be identified.
Sohrab Goth DSP Qamar Ahmed said that the case had been registered on behalf of the state under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. He added that further investigations were underway.
Separately, an alleged street criminal was killed and another was arrested during an encounter with the police in Machhar Colony, within the limits of Docks police. Police officials said that the encounter occurred when the police tried to intercept two suspects looting mourners returning to their homes after attending a majlis. The suspects reportedly resorted to indiscriminate fire in an attempt to escape but the police retaliated, killing one suspect and injuring the other. Both the injured robber and the body of the deceased were moved to Civil Hospital, Karachi. The deceased was later identified as Irfan, alias Dada, and the injured as Adeel.
Police officials said that Irfan had been imprisoned in different police stations at least seven times in the past for various cases of crime. They added that both criminals were Lyari gang members. Weapons were also seized from their possession.
Meanwhile, two suspected members of a Sindhi nationalist party were arrested during a raid conducted at Lasi Goth in Sohrab Goth. The arrested suspects were identified as Nawab Chandio and Sharif. Police officials said that two hand grenades and two pistols were also confiscated from them.
