Pakistan’s hunt for Wushu gold takes place today

Ahmed is guaranteed atleast a silver and will fight for gold in the Wushu event.

KARACHI: Pakistan had an extra-ordinary day in the Wushu event of the 16th Asian Games when Ijaz Ahmed defeated Magsarjav Batjagal in Sanshu 75-kilogramme. Ahmed is guaranteed atleast a silver and will fight for gold today.

Hockey campaign begins today

Pakistan will aim for a winning start to their hockey campaign when they take on Hong Kong in a Group B match today.

Captain Zeeshan Ashraf said Pakistan was ready to fire on all cylinders as they aim for a gold medal, needed to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

“We’re ready and the players are prepared to give their best,” Ashraf told The Express Tribune. “Hong Kong might be a weak side on paper but we won’t take them lightly.”

Ashraf added that the team left for China last week and had acclimatised well with the conditions. After the match against Hong Kong, the Greenshirts will take on Japan tomorrow before facing arch rivals India on November 20 with their last group match against Bangladesh, the following day.

Khan enters boxing last-16

Pakistan were off to a winning start in boxing as Amir Khan overcame Kawachi Masatsugu 5-4 in the opening round of the 64-kilogramme event.

Khan beat the Japanese pugilist to go through to the pre-quarterfinals of the competition.

Pakistan win in volleyball

Pakistan volleyball team claimed a hard-fought 3-2 win over Chinese Taipei. After losing the first game 25-18, Pakistan fought back and claimed a 2-1 lead by winning the next two games 25-21, 25-18. Chinese Taipei hit back winning 25-22. However, Pakistan held their nerves to seal the decisive game 25-15 to win the thrilling encounter.

There was some bad news for Pakistan as they suffered another defeat in baseball when they went down against Korea 31-16.

Cricketers depart today

Pakistan men’s cricket team will depart today eyeing the gold medal. The team will be led by Khalid Latif who is optimistic of his team’s chances.“We are hopeful of a gold but it’s not going to be easy and we  need to work hard,” said Latif.
