LAHORE:

Punjab University (PU) Registrar Liaquat Ali said on Tuesday that the varsity had not raised tuition fees in seven years.

He was speaking to journalists at the undergraduate study centre’s committee room.  Ali said the PU offered students the chance to pursue higher education at the most affordable rate. He said the university had a fleet of 60 busses to ferry students at nominal rates. Ali said this was the largest of its kind in the Punjab.  He said the network covered places as far as Kasur and Kamoke. Ali said students were able to use the service for Rs9 daily as the varsity had been spending millions of rupees to subsidise the cost of diesel.

He said the varsity allocated accommodation to boarders purely on merit. Ali said Baloch students at the university were being taught and housed for free following a directive by Vice-Chancellor Mujahid Kamran. He said the varsity was also giving a monthly Rs3,000 scholarship each to them. Ali said the Islami Jamiat-i-Taliba did not represent PU students as the supreme council had imposed a ban on student elections. Acting Treasurer Rao Muhammad Sharif said the university was earning Rs127 million in fees and was spending Rs109 million on scholarships and Rs11 million on student affairs.  He said the PU was spending Rs15 million to subsidise internet services.  Ali said the varsity had kept tuition fees capped at Rs100 per month despite rising expenses and low grants.
