Deccan qualify for semis
KARACHI:
Deccan Chargers defeated Delhi Daredevils by 11 runs to make their way through to the semi-finals of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gutsy bowling by Deccan halted Delhi’s chase towards the modest 146-run target as they picked up regular wickets in the middle of the innings. Paul Collingwood (51) and Ashish Nehra (22) gave their team a glimmer of a hope towards the end but after being reduced to 86 for seven in the 16th over, it seemed an improbable result.
Collingwood and Nehra added 48 but Delhi fell short of the target and finished fifth in the eight-team IPL. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who is the leading wicket -taker in the tournament with 20 wickets, was the pick of the bowlers with two for 16. But it was the seamers Chaminda Vaas, Mitchell Marsh and Harmeet Singh who dented Delhi’s top -order.
Earlier, a disciplined bowling performance restricted Deccan to a rather low total. Andrew Symonds (54) and Monish Mishra (25) were the only two batsmen to offer any resistance as Nehra and Umesh Yadav picked up a brace each.
At that point, Delhi would have been content with their effort in the field. However, the side was eventually let down by the strong batting line-up to crash out of the tournament.
